Our History

La nostra storia - Coppini Arte Olearia
Ernesto, Francesco e Matteo Coppini

Strong hands marked by hard work, a bicycle, a man and a woman taking on the challenge of a lifetime. This is where our story starts, a simple but beautiful story.

Amèrico Coppini’s job was cheese master, but he was destined for higher things. His grandfather produced extra virgin olive oil in Pistoia and, deep in his heart, Amèrico felt a growing need to connect with his roots. He wanted to revive an activity that he felt passionate about and he was deeply connected with.

So, he hooked two wooden crates to his bicycle to hold samples of his precious olive oil. And this is how Amèrico, on his “muscle propelled” two-wheeler, carried the aroma and richness of extra virgin olive oil in places where it was not even commonly used. Becoming an oil seller, called locally Oliandolo was a vocation for Amèrico. They called him “the oil missionary”, when he travelled around on his bicycle selling the real extra virgin olive oil, and teaching people how to taste it. Amèrico and Anita had already understood, way ahead of their time, the importance of education in food and wine gastronomy; "knowledge first” to fully appreciate a product's characteristics.

On March 26 1946, with his wife Anita he founded the company that would later become a domestic and international brand: Coppini Arte Olearia. Their son Ernesto also joined this ambitious project.

In 1960, Ernesto, only eighteen years old, joined the family business and began by handling aspects related to sales. The torch passed into the right hands. Featuring his father’s same tenacity and perseverance, he too became a main character of this genuine and transparent story. Always supported by his beloved wife Vanna, he made of his job a true mission. A new entrepreneurial spirit emerged with Ernesto, who pursued a search for quality and excellence, and communication. Company cars started displaying the “Olio Perla” logo. The first brand! The first identity.

Times runs quickly. In the Seventies the company expanded further. And the Coppini family did too. The birth of Paolo, Matteo, Francesco and Pier Luigi brought joy and the air was already filled with the expectation of a future of continuity and allegiance to the original vocation as Oliandolo, oil seller.

A fully satisfying profession, and a commitment to quality    During the Eighties and Nineties the company turned its attention to perfecting its own identity. Not just good extra virgin olive oil: the goal is excellence.

In 1985, a buyer threw a challenge: “Parma is not an olive oil producing city whose name can be proudly displayed on the label” and this provocation reinforced even more the need to stress the origin. This gave rise to the desire of certifying and tracing the supply chain.

In 1988, the T.O.P. Project was implemented with the goal to guarantee traceability of the product: Coppini Arte Olearia is the first company to attach a real identification card, a certification of excellent product quality, an ode to transparency on every bottle of extra virgin olive oil.

The new millennium means development and evolution. With the coming on board of the young members of the Coppini Family, the internalization started. Those years were filled with new projects: groves, harvesting and pressing were setup in Abruzzo, Apulia and Sicily with 3 thousand olive growers, called "Gli Olivicoltori d’Italia", supplying their olives according to the specifications established by Coppini Arte Olearia.

As part of the improvement strategy, the “Pilot Mill”, a real research and innovation laboratory, opened in 2012. The following year, the new production plant was built near the motorway close to the headquarters of Fiere di Parma. This is a '“Green Mill”, where olive oil is produced respecting environmental and social sustainability.

In the following years, production expanded with dressings from simultaneous pressing  and other speciality products such as organic olive oil and vegan.

Seventy years have passed since a young man started selling his olive oil in Parma and nearby areas. Seventy years during which Ernesto, and subsequently his sons Matteo, Francesco, Pier Luigi and Paolo have never stopped going forward, supported and guided by the memory of their father.  Being known in Italy and abroad, a dream come true. “Love is an olive tree”, with this ideal at its heart, Coppini Arte Olearia managed to take a small tree all the way up to the National Research Council Pyramid Laboratory, at 5050m altitude, at the base of Mt. Everest. Actions like these demonstrate the commitment shown by the Coppini Family. A family that never held back, always giving the most, and welcoming new challenges with enthusiasm.  Anita and Amèrico, Vanna and Ernesto, his children and a future fourth generation of his children’s children.  Never a complaint, never giving up or getting tired, the enthusiasm for this activity has been handed down for decades without interruption.

Coppini Arte Olearia goes a long way also towards internationalization: from Cibus’ exhibitions to fairs abroad, without ever forgetting its beginnings. The heart of the company keeps on beating in Strada del Grugno.

Amèrico’s bicycle continues pedalling onward without stopping along the road to innovation. Nothing is going to stop the trail of those two wheels that, from the top of the tallest mountains, have reached the Expo in Milan.

It all started from there, strong hands that have always worked hard, a bicycle, a man and a woman taking on the challenge of a lifetime.

This is where our story starts, a simple but beautiful story.
